When is Acupuncture Indicated?
For traditional Chinese medicine, a symptom translates to a failing of the movement of Qi (energy). Since acupuncture is a therapy that aims to mobilize Qi, acupuncture effectively treats functional abnormalities, ie, dysfunction not associated with irreversible organ damage. Reestablishing altered movement, function is restored and the pain disappears.
Since emotions are movements of Qi, acupuncture is useful in liberating feelings, and releasing psychic tension. It is not, however, indicated for severe psychosis.
As for organic illnesses or injuries, acupuncture can provide relief only to optimize the performance of the portion uninjured parts of the body, but is not indicated as a primary treatment.
